I can't figure it out. Old Tue Jan 20, 2009 3:17:51 PM #84016 Perm Link
I know how bad the show got towards the end (or rather, after the first couple dozen episodes). I know that it quickly became derivative. I have agreed and commented on the various character flaws and inconsistencies as the show went on. So, why is it that, despite knowing all of the above, I still cannot stop myself from sitting down and watching it when I have the chance? Seriously, I woke up at around 7 A.M. Sunday morning, noted that Inuyasha was on soon and then, the next thing I knew, was watching it intently and (dare I say) enjoying myself.
Granted I was thinking the same snarky comments that I have when watching, say, Sonic X, but still. What is it about this mediocre, girly DBZ ripoff that draws me in like this? It can't all be nostalgia, because if that was the case I would just watch my Tenchi Universe DVDs.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

ONE its not a rip off of DBZ becouse it has absolutly nothing in commen with it,

Overarching fetch quests that have nothing to do with the overall plot other than getting some MacGuffin item needed to somehow defeat the (current) main bad guy. Training for multiple episodes to do a fight that is over in minutes. Talking with said rival over the course of a full episode (if not more) before actually fighting them while simultaneously not saying anything. Constantly facing enemies that are more powerful than you, despite having trained to incredible strength and obtaining a powerful item days before. This order of events was usually followed by Inuyasha pissing off Kagome so she goes to her time; followed immediately by Inuyasha venting for a day or two before going to get her to start a new quest (essentially repeating the "Sidequest for MacGuffin, training sequence, montage, discourse, fight, Kagome leaves" cycle).

Said By blackwidow47

TWO It actualy has a good story line and plot to it if you pay attention,

The overall plot itself is essentially the exact same thing as Dragonball/early DBZ ("Jewel shards split up and lost. Fight everything that touches them."). The later episodes essentially repeated the formula of DBZ ("Bad guy shows up. Train. Bad guy is killed. New bad guy shows up immediately afterward. Train. New bad guy is killed"), except without any of the variety that DBZ threw in in between story arcs. The only crown jewel episodes I can think of later in the show were the ones where Kagome left to do something rather than because she was angry and then Inuyasha screws up the thing she was doing; but even those episodes began growing thin after the 3rd time they used the concept.
Interspersed in this mess are frequent appearances of one dimensional characters (ie. Sesshomaru, Koga) that reappear for no apparent reason and ridiculous out of place stereotypes (the gay one from the Band of Seven, most of the demon bad guys).

Said By blackwidow47

and THREE it is made by the most famous woman manga/anime writers still alive today.

So? Steven Spielberg is one of the most famous directors/producers of all time. He then directed War of the Worlds and produced Transformers.

Alternatively, I can let FroogleDoop talk for me:

Inuyasha has no inner meaning. It is exaclty everything you see on the surface and has no particular benefit to society. Its primary function is for the entertainment of the masses through an easily understandable Arch type, the quest myth.

Inuyasha has almost no character development. Inuyasha is a bad ass who may have a kinder side but really has no deep though that went into the contruction of his pyche. Kagome is a whiney little girl who cant do anything for herself or anyone else, she is nothing beyond that. Miroku is a lecherous monk, Sango is on the verge of being a dyke. This is as deep as their aspects go, no further. There's really very little that I can say to explain their pyche since they don't really have one. They are not believable characters, you would never know someone like that in the real world - with such a one track personality.

Inuyasha has no real ending. Takahashi san appeared to have been mystified by a shiney object and forgot whatever it was she was going to do with Inuyasha. Thus is spans far over a hundred episodes which serve no purpose or add anything to plot or character development. When it ends, it is abrupt and nonsensical, leaving a very unfinished feel to it.

And here:

Said By FroogleDoop

There's this unrealized sexual tension between InuYasha and Kogome that's drawn out over about 800 episodes, and it's fucking annoying. Also, they always end episodes on a cliffhanger, leaving the 13-year-old girls who stay up late to watch it unable to go to sleep afterwards because they're too busy wondering what the ramnifications of InuYasha catching a glimpse of Kogome's breastasisis at the spring will be. Thanks, assholes.
Beyond that, the plots are formulaic - on the episodic level, the plot is usually "There's a monster. One of the party is under even greater threat than the rest from this monster. Usually it's Kagome. Inuyasha leads the gang to rescue the fallen. If it's Kagome, sexual tension ensues. If it's not Kagome, her seeing Inuyasha's loyal and nice side renew her feelings for him anyways (these always wane at the beginning of the episode due to some perversion - usually only perceived, so the punishment is unjust and preteen guys can sympathize). The renewed interest in Inuyasha leads to sexual tension. The End."

The story was designed to never end (There were and always will be more shards to find even if the pearl was kind of small) so they could capitalize on the inexplicable following the show developed for as long as possible. As a result of this, there is zero character development. None. Nada. Not fucking there.

I watched Inuyasha from Episode 3 to Episode 159 when the episodes were new. I've then watched it start to finish (more or less) two more times in Adult Swim repeats, and have caught a few episodes half-a-dozen times or so in the same span of time. I've seen all of the movies shown on Adult Swim. I've seen every episode but 166 and 167. I can't possibly "try it" any more than I already have.

How so? I go to school. I go to work. I socialize with friends. All during the day.
Do you have a better idea what I should be doing during the night? Because, you know, Adult Swim is on at night.

I like the manga better than the show for Inuyasha.
Of course, I could say that about all anime/manga(s).

Look before you leap, jack ass.

Okay I've never watched Inuyasha what's it about?

It's not what you are doing that bothers me but rather the idiotic way in which you are doing it.
More nightmares will come to me...more than I previously had.

I'm proud (?) to admit that I still suffer from this problem and am looking for a cure. Granted, now I just blow off most of the episodes if they don't catch my eye within 5 minutes, but they still catch my eye! And with the new Inuyasha series inevitably coming out in America, the problem isn't going to get any better.
Please, help me.

Good show. never finshed the seirs though

"Hee-hee-hee! But what fun is destruction if no "precious" lives are lost?"
"Life...dreams...hope...Where do they come from? And where do they go? Such meaningless things...I'll destroy them all!"
"Why do people insist on creating things that will inevitably be destroyed? Why do people cling to life knowing that they must someday die? Knowing that none of it will have meant anything once they do?"
